Using saws
Hack Saws are commonly used for cutting metals, woods and plastic. The work should be held in a vice and soft jaws can be used to minimise any marks that the vice may leave on metal work. While sawing materials you should:
- Check your saw blade is not blunt
- Stand with your feet apart
- Ensure you are well balance
- Place your index finger on the back of the saw to guide your cutting
- Your other had can rest on top of the other end of the saw
- GENTLY saw, this should be effortless let the saw do the work!
- Use all the saw blade
Most saws are made to cut on the push with the exception on coping saw and Japanese saws which cut on the pull.
One tool can not do every job so make sure you select the appropriate tool for the job, and the way you use and hold the tool will be different, make sure you are aware of the direction on the blade so you are aware if it is cutting on the push or pull. Beware of Burr never run your finger along the edge of metal work.
